A collection of The Century Foundation's extensive work on the issue of school vouchers, this volume seeks to go beyond the empty arguments of voucher advocates who take it for granted that the marketplace delivers better results than the public sector. This research aims to call the bluff of voucher supporters: if we are all truly concerned about schools that give low-income students better opportunities and provide a variety of school offerings, why not greatly expand choice within the existing system of public education, where everyone plays by the same set of rules and all schools are publicly accountable? Private school vouchers are not, on the whole, a panacea for the problems of education in the United States.
