Colette Avital, Deputy Speaker of the Israeli Knesset led a discussion on “Fallout from Lebanon: The war’s impact on Israeli politics, the peace process, and U.S Middle East policy,” a policy roundtable of The Century Foundation’s Prospects for Peace Initiative. MK Avital opened with a critical assessment of the situation, post-crisis in Israel, as well as Lebanon, the Palestinian territories, Iran, Syria, and Iraq. While acknowledging Israel made mistakes during the recent conflict with Lebanon, she contends that the outcome for Israel is “not a catastrophe,” as many have asserted in the current, typically Israeli wave of self-criticism and recrimination. Maybe Hezbollah was not completely disarmed, but Israel successfully attained two of its major objectives in eliminating large numbers of Hezbollah’s missiles and in removing Hezbollah from the border, opening the way for the Lebanese state to re-assert its sovereignty in the South and for the Lebanese Army to be deployed there. In fact, as the Israeli public assesses the new landscape, Avital believes the post-conflict moment is an opportunity for important progress toward peace, as such moments have been in the past.
